What is needed to become a data analyst

As it is a new field of work, data analysis courses are still being consolidated in the market. There are courses in traditional universities like Stanford, MIT, and NYU as well as completly free online courses on Coursera, Udacity, and IBM.

While each one of them has different methodologies and demands distinct expertise, there are some general characteristics which are important for those who think about working on this field:

  • Technology skills.  Computers, sensors and software, these are the main tools to generate and analyze data. In order to work with data analysis, one needs to be skilled in the use of existing technologies (and interest in those that still do not exist or are still in the development stage). An understanding of programming languages such as C++, Python or MySQL is an edge as some companies demand previous knowledge.
  • Statistic and numeric knowledge. An analyst needs to be able to handle a massive amount of data thus familiarity with numbers and statistics is a must. It does not require a genius but being able to deal with tables, graphs, comparative analysis, projections and other elements that convert data in easy to access information for managers, departments, and areas.
  • Attention to detail. Paying Attention to details and data validity is important to generate certain results. Nobody wants to make a decision based on wrong data, right? For that reason, the analyst needs to validate precision, relevance and data validity being used in one´s analysis.
  • Creative and strategic ability. At the end of the process, all collected and analyzed data need to be transformed into understandable information, which creates value and intelligence. This process requires creativity from the professional along with the ability to analyze the organization in a strategic way.

Besides those specific skills, it is convenient that the data analyst possesses other characteristics which are essential to perform in the business intelligence field. Multidisciplinarity, being able to work as a team,  segment knowledge, proactiveness, adaptability to rapid changes and involvement in the company´s objectives.
